Paulo P. Monteiro received the diploma “Licenciatura” in Electronics and Telecommunications Engineering from the University of Aveiro in 1988, the M.Sc. in Electronic Engineering from the University of Wales UK in 1990, and the Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering from the University of Aveiro in 1999. He is an Associate Professor at the University of Aveiro and the research coordinator of Optical Communications Systems at the Instituto de Telecomunicações (https://www.it.pt/Groups/Index/59). From October 2002 until March 2007, he was a Head of Research of Optical Networks at Siemens S.A, Portugal. From April 2007 until December 2009, he was at Nokia Siemens Networks (NSN) Portugal as a Research Manager at Transport, Aggregation, and Fixed Access and from January 2010 until June 2012 as an R&D manager of the Network Optimization unit at NSN. From July 2012 until May 2013, he was a research Manager at NSN Portugal. In May 2013, the Optical Networks business unit of Nokia Siemens Networks began operating as a new company, Coriant, which he left in June 2013. In 1992, he joined the Department of Electronic and Telecommunications Engineering of the University of Aveiro and the Optical Communications Group of the Institute for Telecommunications as an Assistant Professor and Researcher, respectively. In 1999, he became an Auxiliary Professor at the University of Aveiro and was promoted to Associate Professor in 2005. His main research interests include optical communication networks, microwave photonics, and electronic subsystems. He has successfully tutored and co-tutored more than 18 PhDs and participated in more than 28 projects (national and international). He has authored/co-authored more than 19 patent applications, over 160 papers in journals, and 300 conference contributions (https://orcid.org/0000-0003-4664-9238).
